Rodents – Frozen/Thawed or Live?
The Looney lunches carries frozen rodents to feed your reptiles. There are a number of reasons for this:
The safety of your reptiles. We have gotten in some snakes who, have been chomped on by their live rodent while trying to kill it. One poor ball python came in with his nose one big scab, his mouth slimy from trying to heal because as he was killing his rodent it turned and bit him badly. He has healed up nicely, but was afraid of his rodents, even though they were already dead. He is still shy about eating, wants to be sure it is not moving before he tries to eat it.
Keeping live rodents is messy and time consuming. If you have 1 or 2 snakes and buy as needed this might not be a problem. If you have multiple snakes and need different sizes of rodents or the very small one, you almost have to raise them yourself. This can be a full time job in and of its self, or very expensive if you need to weekly have the different sizes/ages you need.
Keeping your food stocks in a freezer where they do not require feeding or cleaning is much easier.
Every snake that we have brought in that “only eats live” has switched to the frozen thawed in a short time. There are a couple of tricks, and yes, sometimes a snake just won’t switch and will only take live, but usually they switch with some work. If you do have one that is “Live Only” you can occasionally re try to make the switch, but like said earlier, a few just won’t.
This is the snake mentioned above. This pic does not show the hole in the top of his nose or the huge scab that came off, or the total slimy mess his poor mouth was, but it all healed up now and he is eating again, just kind of shy. (wants to be sure they arn't going to bite back I think)
